Diabetes and PCOS
Diabetes and PCOS are sometimes related. Affecting only women because it's related to the ovaries, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is an endocrine (hormonal) disorder that may be linked to insulin. In many women with PCOS, the body is unable to properly process insulin so too much insulin builds up. In people with diabetes, the body either makes no insulin or cannot properly process insulin to control blood glucose. Dr. David Ehrmann, the Diabetes Center's Director of Education and Director of the University of Chicago Center for PCOS, is an expert in both PCOS and diabetes. This combined expertise is particularly helpful for women with both conditions.
