Technology

As a diabetes center that integrates innovation into patient care, the University of Chicago Kovler Diabetes Center offers patients the newest and best technologies to help manage their blood glucose. Our team has experience with nearly every model of insulin pump, glucose sensor and glucose meter - so we can fit the right technology and tools to each person's needs. Often, we can offer patients promising new tools before they are FDA-approved - months or even years before they're available through most community physicians or hospitals.

Our team is committed to successful use of all methods for controlling blood glucose and insulin. We encourage patients to participate in individualized training and group classes designed to help people with diabetes adjust to these new tools.

Making the Switch to an Insulin Pump

Among the most promising advances in diabetes management, insulin pump therapy may be a viable option for individuals who are on intensive insulin regimens. Insulin pumps are designed to regulate insulin and glucose levels by adjusting to changes in physical activity, eating and other factors that occur throughout the person's day.

Insulin pump therapy may be appropriate for people who are on an intensive insulin regimen:

  • Taking three or more insulin shots per day; and
  • Checking blood sugars at least four times daily.

Our structured, supportive Insulin Pump Program helps individuals transition from finger pricks and injections to pump therapy.

I have type 2 diabetes. I am afraid of needles, but my doctor told me it is time for me to start taking insulin injections. Can you tell me more about injecting insulin, especially about the needles?
